ClampOn PIG Detector – Ex i vs. Ex d e
The ClampOn PIG Detector is available in two explosion protection versions: Ex i (Intrinsically Safe) and Ex d e (Flameproof). Both options give operators flexibility to meet hazardous area requirements without sacrificing performance or reliability.
Working Principle
The ClampOn PIG Detector uses both acoustic and magnetic detection to identify pigs moving through pipelines.
- Acoustic mode: Detection of Ultrasonic energy in the pipe due to PIG passing.
- Magnetic mode: Detection of disturbances in magnetic fields created by magnet-equipped pigs.
Advanced signal processing algorithm separate pig-related signals from normal flow noise, ensuring accurate detection even under challenging conditions such as high-pressure systems, multiphase flow, or varying fluid compositions. In situ calibration may be required for optimal performance of algorithm.
Key features:
- Non-intrusive design: Mounted externally, no pipeline penetration or process interruption.
- Real-time monitoring: Instant feedback when a pig passes the sensor location.
- Dual-mode detection: Acoustic + magnetic sensing for maximum reliability.
- High sensitivity: Detects pigs of any size, type, or speed in liquid or gas pipelines.
Similarities Between Ex i and Ex d e
- Same design and functionality: Both versions deliver identical accuracy for pig detection.
- Easy installation: No difference in mounting—quick and safe setup.
- Reliable performance: Continuous monitoring regardless of protection method.
The Difference Lies in Explosion Protection
- Ex i (Intrinsically Safe): Electronics limit energy so sparks or heat cannot ignite gases in hazardous areas. Requires barriers in the control system.
- Ex d e (Flameproof): Built to contain an internal explosion without spreading flames. No additional barriers needed.
As can be seen from the above, the choice between Ex I and Ex d e depends primarily on the explosion protection philosophy and site-specific requirements.
All ClampOn instruments are subject to the same quality system ensuring high quality and reliability.
