ClampOn awarded Industrial Research and Development contract

ClampOn_Corrosion_Erosion_Subsea_transperant
Permanently installed corrosion-erosion monitoring system on a subsea pipeline, transdusers being installed under coating and connected to the ROV retrievable processing unit.ClampOn started the process with developing the subsea CEM in 2007. When the dry transducer technology was finalized, ClampOn needed involvement from operators in order to get access to test facilities and other user required assistance. ClampOn discussed the project case with the Norwegian Center of Expertise (NCE) Subsea. They assisted in setting up a pre-project aiming at the Industrial Reseach and Development program in Innovation Norway. Idevekst Energi was selected as the consultant assisting with preparing the application, provide necessary information to proceed to establish a partnership with BP and applying for funding from Innovation Norway.

The project is based on ClampOn’s topside Corrosion-Erosion Monitoring system which has been developed to measure changes in pipe wall thickness over a pre-determined pipe area using only a limited number of sensors. This technology has been installed and deployed topside and is now being developed for subsea installations. Key to this program is BP’s recent experience in developing and deploying corrosion measurement probes across its facilities, as well as extensive experience in development and deployment of subsea technologies.

The CEM is an online, real-time path based thickness assessment tool that deploys a set of transducers over a given pipe area and utilizes a dispersion based principle to assess wall thickness loss. The industry’s need for reliable monitoring of changes in wall thickness in subsea pipelines encouraged us to develop the instrument for subsea applications.

The purpose of the JIP is to develop and field trial both a ROV-installable and a low profile new build version of the Corrosion-Erosion Monitoring system for subsea templates, flow jumpers, manifolds and flow lines etc., which will measure changes in pipe wall thickness on a continuous basis. The CEM system is designed for non-intrusive subsea wall thickness corrosion rate monitoring and allows a flexible installation on beds, flow lines, straight pipes, etc.

The system will monitor pipe wall thickness over a relatively large pipe area and a pipe length of two (2) meters can be monitored. The system will report corrosion rate and location at a frequency that is determined by the operating organization.

A collaboration agreement is in place between ClampOn, Innovation Norway and BP for the development of subsea permanently installed systems, with each partner providing equal resources.

BP
is one of the world’s largest oil and gas companies, serving millions of customers every day in more than 90 countries, and employing over 85,000 people. BP’s business segments are Exploration & Production which includes its lower carbon gas activities and Refining & Marketing. In alternative energies, BP has low- and no-carbon wind, solar, biofuels, and power generation/carbon capture projects. It has strong positions in many of the world’s hydrocarbons basins and strong market positions in key economies.

Innovation Norway promotes nationwide industrial development profitable to both the business economy and Norways national economy, and helps release the potential of different districts and regions by contributing towards innovation, internationalization and promotion. Innovation Norway has offices in all the Norwegian counties and in more than 30 countries worldwide.

The Norwegian Centre of Expertise Subsea
is an initiative by the subsea industry in the Bergen area, Norway, for the strengthening and internationalisation of business, R&D and education. The objective is to promote innovation activity, increase international involvement and improve the capacity, competitiveness and value creation of individual players within the cluster as well as the cluster as a whole.
